We normally try to stay away from conditions such as this. We were on our way from Yellowstone to Florida in mid October when we stopped by Des Moines, Iowa to see family and meet an old high school friend at the Iowa State University homecoming. Not normal conditions for so early in the season but we did get caught.
Bannack, Montana was at its height in 1865 when gold was discovered nearby. Today its a ghost town and a state park and each summer they celebrate their gold rush heritage. It's a fun time for the historians that come to relive those days of old and for the visitor that happens to stumble upon this little corner of the west.
Petrified Tree National is a Park (or Monument). It's one of those parks you see a sign to along the road and decide to follow it out of curiosity. This is a picture of a petrified tree. Seems as they age they break apart. I read why but don't remember now.
Another one of those snow scenes that we try and stay away from. This one is in western Nebraska on Interstate 80. We were headed west on our way to Yellowstone and it was a beautiful sunny morning as we started driving that morning. Then it got cloudy and soon it was snowing. We stopped at the first campground we came across and this was the scene the next morning. We spent two days there before moving on. When traveling this time of year we always allow two or three extra days for the weather so these little events don't cause us to be late or upset our plans.
Every summer in the town of Belgrade, Montana (just west of Bozeman on Interstate 90) local enthusiasts hold a steam engine show. In this particular scene they are making boards our of logs using a steam driven mill. At this show they have all sorts of steam engines and the machinery that used them. I've seen such things in museums but never in an operating mode. I found it very interesting.
An old farm house in north central Iowa (near Eldora) that was made famous by the movie Twister. It's the house you see at the end of the movie in the final storm scene.
Sunset in the Grand Canyon. I always grab a sunset picture wherever I'm at. You've probably guessed that already if you've looked at all of my photos. In this case the shadows cast by the western mountains made for a very beautiful scene and the actual sunset wasn't very spectacular.
