A few facts about the park. 

  • The park is 63 miles north to south and 54 miles east to west.
  • 96% is in Wyoming, 3% in Montana and 1% in Idaho.
  • Larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined.

     Animals include

  • 7 species of ungulates
  • 2 species of bears
  • about 50 species other mammals
  • 11 species of fish
  • 5 species of reptiles
  • 4 species of amphibians

  • Approximately 200 to 250 active geysers One of the worlds largest calderas (30 x 40 miles)
  • Declared a National Park by the US Congress in 1872
  • It contains 3,472 square miles or 2,221,766 acres
  • It has 370 miles of paved roads, 5 entrances and 6 visitor centers
  • Approximately 10% of the park is covered by water.
  • Annual precipitation ranges from 10 inches at the north boundary to 80 inches in the southwest corner
  • Temperatures range from 10 degrees mean January to 55 degrees mean July in the center of the park.
  • Largest concentration of large and small mammals in the lower 48 states.
  • Approximately 10,000 thermal features.
